Nepheline syenite is part of a group of minerals which flux ceramic bodies. Because of its high levels of sodium and potassium oxides, and low levels of silica, less nepheline syenite is needed in the ceramic recipe. More silica needs to be added which will be a local material.
The main properties given to FFC body:
- Lowers the firing temperature
- Forms a vitreous mass with free silica
- Increases cast rate.
